Consultant Psychiatrist in Substance Misuse, Cardiff and Vale UHB, NHS Wales.

Dr Melichar qualified in medicine in 1992, gaining his research doctorate (MD) in 2004 from research on PET neuroimaging and pharmacology of opiate addiction. He became an NHS Consultant in Substance Misuse in 2006 and, after gaining a prestigious national career development award in 2008, he became a Clinical Senior Lecturer in Psychopharmacology at the University of Bristol until early 2015. He was elected and served as a member of the National Executive, Addictions Faculty of the Royal College of Psychiatrist and has recently been re-elected for a further term (2018-2022).

He was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 2015 and is currently medical director of a third sector charity as well as working academically at the University.

In 2020 Dr Melichar joined Cardiff and Wales University Health Board as a Consultant Psychiatrist in Substance Misuse based in Cardiff and in March the following year he was appointed Visiting Professor by SURG (Substance Use Research Group) which is located within the Centre for Criminology at the University of South Wales.
